VISAKHAPATNAM: The India Youth For Society (IYFS)- an NGO working in the city is organising a workshop on, ‘plastic-waste handling and controlling measures’ at the Gandhi Centre in Dr LB College on Saturday.

According to the organisers, the workshop is aimed at educating the participants about segregation of waste at source, which is an important step towards effective waste management. The participants will also be shown the process of managing waste after source segregation.

According to a report by the pollution control board, the city generates around 90 tonnes of waste on a daily basis.

Vice-president of IYFS, Y Appala Reddy, said, “Our team has been trained and we now want to spread the word to involve like-minded people and volunteers in the campaign to make Vizag a plastic free city.

The plastic waste, after segregation, will be collected door-to-door by GVMC staff, taken to waste bin points and transported to a dry resource centre or the recycling unit.

The recycling unit will clean the plastic and make it reusable or sell it to manufacturers once it has been recycled.
